Google Bard vs ChatGPT in 2024

by Kevin T.

The past year has been very busy for creative AI bots, and it looks like the technology will accelerate in the coming year. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Bard are currently the big two. But which one will be the best by the end of 2024?

We don’t claim to be able to see into the future, but we are curious to see where these two AI engines are headed. They are both based on Large Language Models (LLMs) and use massive amounts of training data to create blocks of text and graphics from scratch based on your commands.

Because creative AI is already here, it won’t disappear. It will continue to change everything from how we post online to how we search for new information. What could be next for ChatGPT and Bard?

How the bots work

Google Bard did not appear until March 2023, but ChatGPT as early as November 2022. Google has long used AI in many of its products, but when it comes to creative AI, it seems like it’s behind the times.

OpenAI announced many new features for ChatGPT in late 2023. One of them was the ability to create your own bots. However, there is one key difference: ChatGPT has both a free and paid Plus option, while Bard is free for everyone.

Many of the things that make ChatGPT different from Bard are only available to Plus users who pay $20 a month. These include the ability to analyze shared PDFs, create custom bots and create generative AI images (via DALL-E).

Gemini, Google’s updated AI model for Bard, came out in late 2023. It claims faster results and even better performance than the GPT-4 engine on which ChatGPT Plus runs. It is also important to note that Google has been busy linking Bard to all of its other apps.

What we do know is that Google makes a lot of devices and software, and Bard will continue to try to reach people through all of those devices and software.

Both ChatGPT and Google Bard have done a good job with the basics of creating text and code. To get up-to-date information, both can look at images and connect to the Internet, although that is only possible with the ChatGPT Plus version.

What will happen in 2024?

AI with more modes
Chatbots are already multimodal, meaning they can handle different types of data, such as writing and pictures. But in the next 12 months, they will become even more flexible and easier to use.

More equipment
OpenAI will open its AI bot store sometime in 2024. In the future, it is likely that both ChatGPT and Google Bard will be built into more and more apps and services, ready to be used for specific tasks.

Making it more unique
If you give AI too much information about you or your company, you have to be careful. But people who want more personalization options should be able to get them. This should make answers more useful every user.

Also, Android phones will soon have Assistant with Bard and Bard will soon be added to Google Assistant in general.

Google wants to reach the user

It may be a bit lame to say that otherwise much will remain the same in 2024, but that is what will most likely happen. No doubt, however, the AI models will become faster and more accurate in their answers and have more options, such as image generation in Bard.

We don’t have a long-term plan for their bots, either from Google or OpenAI, so we don’t know what new features and capabilities are coming.

What we do know is that Google makes a lot of devices and software, and Bard will continue to try to reach people through all those devices and software. At some point in the future, Bard’s AI will be added to Google Assistant. However, no one knows for sure when that will happen.

As for OpenAI, the launch of the AI app store has been delayed until sometime in 2024 after some problems in the company. Bard can already connect to Google’s environment, but OpenAI is still working to make its ecosystem bigger.

The main differences right now

  1. Overall Performance and Applications:
GPT-4: Has an edge in generating specific and actionable responses. It is versatile and widely applicable in tasks such as writing, summarization, translation and code generation. Better understanding of complex user prompts.
Google Bard: Excellent for tasks that require real-time Internet access. User-friendly but can be less specific in responses.
  2. Multimodal Functionality:
GPT-4: Can handle both text and image prompts, enabling new applications such as converting sketches to code.
Google Bard: No prominent mention of multimodal functionality.
  3. Language support:
GPT-4: Supports more than 26 languages, including languages with fewer resources.
Google Bard: Supports multiple languages, but specific details are less clear.
  4. Security and Accuracy:
GPT-4: Shows improvements in user security and content accuracy.
Google Bard: May rely on real-time Internet data, which increases misinformation risk.
  5. Specific Tasks and Applications:
Ad Text Generation: GPT-4 performs better with better understanding of product details.
Summary and Analysis: BARD and PaLM are better at selecting key phrases, although GPT-4 performs well in 80% of tasks tested.
  6. Technical Differences.
Both models are causal LLMs with decoder-only transformer architectures, but details such as parameter size may differ.

Deciding who will win

We are not sure whether ChatGPT or Google Bard will be the best creative AI robot by the end of 2024, but our best guess is that they will both do well in different ways.

Because of custom GPTs and the GPT app store, ChatGPT will likely be used in more third-party apps, websites and services. This is because many people will try to make money from the AI, which will move things forward.

Based on 2023, we also know that OpenAI likes to add new features quickly. We think OpenAI will continue to be the leader in creative AI in 2024 and get closer to making AI smarter than humans.

Conclusion

Keep an eye on Bard as it grows by reaching more people through Google apps and accounts that Google already has. That’s one thing Bard does well, and it lets it be more personalized. For example, it can change its responses based on what you search for online, where you’ve been or even how you write your emails.

The choice between GPT-4 and Google Bard depends mostly on the specific use case and requirements, as each model offers optimized performance in different scenarios.

As for the AI technology behind it, ChatGPT will probably still be better than Google Bard even in 2025. But Bard won’t really lose; in fact, more people may start using it.

No matter who wins, in the end the users are the real winners! This AI arms race will push both platforms to new heights in the coming year and probably for many years to come.
